The UK’s electricity system is shifting fast, but there’s still a problem—renewable energy is often at its peak when people don’t need it.
That means wind and solar power sometimes go to waste (see more detail on this here) while fossil fuels still dominate during peak hours, keeping bills high and carbon emissions unnecessary. Windfall Energy is tackling this issue with a simple, automated solution: a smart plug and home battery designed to help households use the greenest, cheapest electricity without changing their routines.
The Problem: Wasted Green Energy, Higher Bills
In December 2024, low-carbon energy made up over 80% of the UK’s electricity mix at certain times—yet during peak hours, fossil fuels still took over.
This mismatch means:
– Renewables aren’t being used as efficiently as they could be.
– Households are missing out on savings.
– The grid still relies on fossil fuels during peak times.
To fix this, households need a way to shift their energy use to when renewables are most abundant—without having to think about it. That’s where Windfall Energy comes in.
The Solution: Windfall’s Smart Plug & Home Battery
Windfall Energy has two products in development: They’re simple, affordable products designed to help homes use greener, cheaper electricity—automatically.
🔌 The Windfall Plug – A plug adapter that only turns on when electricity is clean and cheap. Perfect for charging devices, running dehumidifiers, or even heating clothes airers at optimal times.
🔋 The Windfall Battery – A home battery that charges when energy is cheapest and discharges when needed. Unlike traditional home battery systems, it plugs directly into a normal wall socket, making it perfect for renters and apartment dwellers.
💡 The best part? Once set up, there’s no need to adjust settings—it just works.

How Much Can It Save?
Early beta testing is already proving that Windfall’s smart plug can reduce costs and emissions.
One tester, Chris, plugged his heated clothes dryer into a Windfall Plug. Instead of running it during peak hours, the plug automatically found the cheapest, greenest time to switch on.
In just over two weeks, his plug ensured:
✅ 16.36 kWh of energy was used during “Windfall Hours” (when renewables were highest).
✅ His energy mix was 80% renewable (compared to the UK average of 60%).
✅ A projected £6 per month saving—meaning the plug could pay for itself in just three months.
With an expected retail price of around £20, the Windfall Plug is an easy, low-cost way to reduce household energy bills and carbon emissions.
Windfall’s Vision: Smarter Homes, Cleaner Energy
Ashley Grealish, Co-Founder & CEO of Windfall Energy, explains why they’re building this technology:
“The energy grid is changing, but most home energy tech is still designed for people who own large homes outside of the city, and can install solar panels or big battery systems. We wanted to build something simple -something that works for anyone, whether you live in a flat, a rented home, or just want a hassle-free way to lower your bills and carbon footprint.
Our goal with Windfall Energy is to make it effortless to take advantage of cheap, green energy. You plug it in, and it does the rest.”
Windfall is currently offering beta versions of their Windfall Plug to UK testers, with wider availability expected soon.
A Smart, Affordable Step Toward Cleaner Energy
Most people want to live more sustainably, but they don’t have time to micromanage when they charge their devices or run appliances.
Windfall is making sustainable home energy simple, automated, and accessible—with no expensive installations or complicated setups.
With beta testing underway and product launches on the horizon, Windfall Energy is proving that a smarter, greener home can be as easy as plugging in a device.
